The Writer’s Strike

After a little over two months the writer’s strike is still going strong – and I support them wholeheartedly. I know a lot of people are disappointed that their favorite shows are no longer running new episodes – I for one, miss The Family Guy, Saturday Night Live and The Office – but keep in mind that the writers are no happier than their loyal viewers are – they’re fighting for their livelihoods as well as the future of their industry – while losing portions of their own income in the process.

For those unfamiliar with the circumstances of the strike, the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) negotiates with the American Motion Pictures and Television Producers (AMPTP) every few years. During negotiations last year there were several issues that the two sides were unable to agree on. The most significant of those concerns were with regards to DVD royalties, animation and reality tv programming jurisdiction and possibly the most critical issue – remuneration for new media such as web video downloads, iTunes videos purchases and other digital content like cable and satellite television’s new “pay per view” or “video on demand”.

As someone who lives by his creativity, I can fully understand their position that if media corporations, movie moguls and entertainment executives are benefiting financially from their creativity, why shouldn’t they be fairly compensated as well?

That reminds me, I’ve taken most of the “limited edition” apparel down. I’ll be taking the last one down on Monday. So for those still wanting one – act fast!
